The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Archives suppports its commitment to education, scholarship, and librarianship by providing fellowship and grant opportunities is three (3) areas:

Ellen Brenner

The Ellen Brenner Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to a librarian, archivist, or MLS candidate who wish to further their studies in science librarianship; and members of the scientific community who wish to begin or continue a career as a science librarian or archivist.

Sydney Brenner

The Sydney Brenner Research Scholarship is awarded each year to scholars, historians, or writers who wish to use the CSHL Archives for research pertaining to any of the wide variety of topics, both scientific and otherwise, to be found in our Archives. In addition to the molecular biology revolution, genetics, cancer, plant biology, and neuroscience, our collections also bear on topics such as: women in science, the development of scientific research in 19th & 20th century America, the intersection of biology and physics, and many more!

The CSHL Archives also provides Research Travel Grants to defray travel and lodging costs for individuals planning to travel to the Archives for research purposes.

Decisions for the Research Travel Grants are announced in December of each year.

Decisions for the Ellen Brenner Memorial Fellowship and the Sydney Brenner Research Scholarship are announced in May of each year.

While all three programs fund research at the CSHL Library and Archives, they are intended for separate purposes.

  • The Ellen Brenner Memorial Fellowship is intended for librarians and archivists looking to begin or continue their careers in those fields at the CSHL Library and Archives.
  • The Sydney Brenner Research Scholarship covers expenses associated with conducting research for your project pertaining to the history of molecular biology and other related topics in the CSHL Archives
  • The Research Travel Grant may be used to fund travel or lodging expenses to come to CSHL to conduct research for your project in the CSHL Archives

 


Fellowship Questions

Payment will be divided into three installments. The first installment will be dispensed when fellowship recipients begin their research. The second installment will follow a month later. The final installment will be delivered upon completion of the fellows' research


The Carnegie Library Building is open to all Monday-Friday from 8:30am – 6pm. Outside of normal hours, the building is open to all CSHL staff and students with a valid ID card. The Archives is open to fellowship recipients Monday-Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. Should you require access outside of these hours, please contact our archivists.


CSHL Questions

Housing is provided for all Scholarship and Fellowship recipients on-campus in Dolan Hall.


The rooms at Dolan Hall are furnished by our Facilities Department, including daily housekeeping. So, for instance, you will not need to bring sheets for your bed or towels.


CSHL's campus has several dining options from Monday through Friday, available at subsidized prices.

The campus shuttle service to the Syosset Long Island Railroad station also drops off passengers in downtown Syosset, with several restaurants and convenience stores within a half-mile walk.

Nearby Huntington is also home to a high concentration of restaurants as well, and is just a short taxi ride away.
